Ok, so what’s new about the new tablet everyone is talking about?

Let’s see…

  • The new design is 33% smaller than its predecessor.

So it’s a whole lot thinner, smaller and even lighter. The original model measured in at 246 x 190 x 13 mm and 680g (for the WiFi-only version); the new iPad 2 slims that down to 241 x 186 x 8.8 mm and 601g, while still keeping the screen size able to display 9.7-inches, at 1024 x 768 with a resolution of 132ppi as on the first iPad.  It also comes with the same oleophobic coating for easier fingerprint removal.

  • The new iPad 2 comes with the latest processing power from Apple, the dual-core Apple A5.

With a custom SoC it promises significantly higher performance than its single-core A4 predecessor, so with two 1 GHz cores you’re bound to notice a difference.

  • It has double the amount of memory than its predecessor, coming in at 512MB

How much difference will this make?  Well, if you normally use more memory intensive apps like The Daily, then yes.  It loads much smoother and quicker on the iPad 2, also do games like Infinity Blade, this is primarily due to the iPad 1’s 256MB RAM.  It also comes with 16 GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash storage.

  • It debuts Apple’s new mobile platform, the iOS 4.3

This pre-installed platform promises more than double the JavaScript performance, adding up to significantly boosted browsing and rendering speeds.  The other big additions are AirPlay upgrades and Home Sharing. AirPlay in iOS 4.3 now includes the ability for third-party apps to take advantage of it.  So, in other words, Java applets like Facebook will load far quicker.  Meanwhile, there’s also support for iTunes home sharing, pulling iTunes content on a Mac or PC over a WiFi network to the iPad 2.

  • It now has twin cameras

Up front is a VGA-resolution 640 x 480 webcam capable of recording 30fps video and shooting stills, but really intended for Apple’s FaceTime video calls. On the back, meanwhile, is a 720p HD 30fps video camera also capable of stills, and with a 5x digital zooms.

  • Finally, there’s the much-anticipated HDMI support for the iPad 2

Not via a dedicated port though, but using a $39 adapter dongle that hooks up to the Dock Connector.  Native and third-party apps are duplicated at up to 1080p Full HD resolution, with landscape and portrait orientation support, while movies output at up to 720p HD.

Ok, so..The new Apple iPad 2 is thinner, lighter and 33% smaller.  So it’s easier to handle when using only one hand and reading ebooks or using the Kindle app.  It comes with 2 cameras, you still have the same amount of battery life, which is 10hrs, and get this;  Apple has also fixed the price, so it costs the same as the iPad 1! The range starts off at $499, as before, for the 16GB iPad 2 WiFi, climbing to $599 for the 32GB and $699 for the 64GB. As for the WiFi + 3G models, both the AT&T and Verizon variants are priced at $629 for the 16GB iPad 2, $729 for the 32GB and $829 for the 64GB.

Do you need to buy it?  No .  Would you want one?  Hell yes .  This little “suuped-up” iPad will be keeping you busy far beyond the 10hr lifespan of the battery 😉
