When you have new born puppies there are a few things you can do to help them survive. The first 2 weeks are the most important. Usually if they make it that far and nothing major happens they will make it. First of all at birth make sure that you help the mother as needed. If she don't remove the sac from the baby fast enough you should remove it and rub the baby to help breathing. Remove everything from his nose and mouth.

Make sure that she don't sit on the babies. If a baby gets stuck you can gently ''pull'' it out of the mother. Remember gently. Their eyes will open anytime from 9 - 15 days with 13 being the average. Their ears a few days after that.

Apart from all of that, babies need to drink at least every 2 hours. Make sure that no male dogs are interfering with the mother and the puppies. Give the mother lot's of water and food and increase her calcium intake. A good brand of dog pellets helps. You can even give her some tea. Make sure there is warm blankets or something similar for her and the puppies. In winter you can bring them indoors, get a heating pad, infra red light or something similar to help fight the freezing colds, as baby dogs will die in low temperatures. Continue reading

Choosing the right dog for your family can be a difficult task.

I will point out a few things to make it easier for you. First of all if you have children or get a lot of visitors at your home with children you want to consider the fact that some dogs are just not good with children or some dogs are better with children than other.

If you want a guard dog you won't be buying a poodle or Chiwawa altought a Chiwawa can be a small alarm running around. You might consider getting a big and small dog or two dogs of a kind for breeding or other reasons.

Take note that some dogs want to have other dogs to play with and to keep them busy and less naughty. I would suggest that you visit http://www.loveanimals.co.za a nice website with all the different dog breeds and their temperament.

Decide if you want a big or small dog, a guard dog or a friendly family pet and then read the needs of that dog and talk to people owning such dogs. Continue reading

.Rat's are known to have some bacteria and viruses on them and therefore it is necessary that you clean your pet rat cage.

The first step is to remove your rat/s from the cage and put them in any other container where they will spent a few minutes...

Then remove everything from the cage.

Wash the whole cage and all the bowls and toys , everything with warm water and soap.

Make sure that everything is washed even the water bottle - everything. Then dry everything with a cloth and add new bedding and food.

Do this at least 3-5 times per week. The next wash is a deep cleansing wash and you need to do this at least every 10-14 days.

Do all the above steps the only difference here is that you will be washing with a very strong anti-septic liquid and soap and mix it with vinegar and lemon juice.

Remember to rinse with water at least 5 times to ensure all the cleaning liquid is removed. Dry with a cloth and leave in the sun for a few hours before putting your bedding, toys and rats back Continue reading
